I understand they like hard water and top out at 10". Supposedly very peaceful fish. I love their look. Anyone ever try this combo, White Lip with CA or SA? Seems as though it would work...

Might work with central americans, as many CA cichlids also like hard water with a higher pH around 8. I believe the mdoko are omnivores, so a balanced cichlid diet like NLS would be appropriate. The issue I could see coming up would be aggression from the central americans, as the placidochromis are not usually very aggressive. If a large central decided to lip-lock, the placidochromis wouldn't know what to do, might even get their lips ripped off. Personally, would just keep the placidochromis with other haplochromines. But with the right centrals, maybe rainbow cichlids for example, it would probably be do-able.

Wow, hadn't considered the lip lock thing...thought one would be a perfect addition, peaceful and not too big. Beautiful fish, tho.

Although I can’t offer advise to working with some of the SA or CA cichlids, they will definitely lip lock and fight for dominance. Mine did and still will if necessary to hold position in an all male peacock / hap tank. He’s roughly 4 3/4” now and currently number three to a 7” yellow fin Borleyi and a really close to 7” Taiwan Reef. Just trying to confirm lip locking will happen. My favorite fish by the way. :headbang2

How big is the tank, and what species Central American?
I have kept African rift lake species with Centrals, and it worked fine, as long as the tank was large enough, and the Centrals of a less aggressive temperament.
It might also be problematic if the Central are, or have distinct blue coloration. (e.g.JDs, carpintis)
They might see the new blue Africans, as direct completion

Was trying to determine if this would work with an O, a BP, a Sev and a Syno in the 225...they're all basically in the local water with no problems. Although the Sev is definitely a blue ish color I don't know if that would be trouble. Sometimes I would see africans mixed in other tanks but only certain ones. Don't want anything that the O might eat, I've seen pics of Os with an african in their gob.

I’ve read/complimented on a lot of your threads FINWIN. You obviously take great pride and care in everything you do. I think as long as the White Lips is big enough to stay out of the mouth of others, it will mainly be the aggression “as duanes duanes says” to watch for. I have several types of blues in the tank he’s in, but the only one he has had a twirling lip lock with was a mostly blue Mdoka Flametail. The White Lips won by the way and is very content/healthy in the tank. (And for the haters, I don’t condone fish fighting, it happens when trying to make all male tanks work.) One more thing, mine is F1, so no hybridization involved in its attitude. Anyhow FINWIN, I would say to try it. You are smart enough to know how to handle the situation if it doesn’t work out. Good luck!

Thanks. I come here to learn and have fun (not fuss and argue for the h+++ of it) :nilly:

Do the white lips like pots? I could put another pot in if needed. I got pretty excited when I saw some white lips available on ebay and they don't seem too small.

I'd rate my territorial scale like this, one to 10

Oscar /Bp a tie, around 8
Sev 0
Syno 0

So kind of a mixed bag. The BP lets the Sev stay on his side but only in the 'allowed' parts. The O wants to boss everyone and chases the others but isn't vicious, just a big bully kinda thing. He and the BP mix it up some and the BP always wins when they do. The Syno mostly stays on the O's side but is kinda freestyle and goes everywhere.

Also do the females color up like the males?

Did a bit of searching...the ones available on Ebay are 3 inch subdominant male and 3 inch pairs. Would go with the male but the size concerns me. Everyone else out of stock so far. Will keep poking around.
