In My House
So I've been thinking. A lot of us use biomax which is ceramic rings. Anyone ever thought of crushing up ceramic tile.? Now I'm no pro in filtration, but I'm always looking for alternative ways to save money. Just 2-3 tiles crushed up to about an inch in size would easily fill up the media trays in my fx5. I KNOW ceramic tile isn't harmful to the fish, but my question is, will this actually work in place if that hella expensive fluval biomax.ceramic rings?

The glaze on ceramic tile is made up of pigments and other materials. I am not sure those are safe for an aquarium, and removing the glaze seems like a tedious ultimately inefficient process. I guess if you could buy the unglazed clay material after it was baked? I don't know. Interesting idea though.

A lot of stuff works as biomedia for instance gravel. The reason we pay so much is because they are very porous and have a lot of surface area.
