I'm thinking of getting a marbled hrp from Jeff Rapps. I've already thought about dithers, either Columbian blue and red tetras or long fin serpae tetras. (I know, long fin serpae tetra is an oxymoron in itself)
I was wondering if you could use platies as dithers. I like platies a lot, they're colorful, fast, they school a bit and eat algae. They also get a size that they can't just get sucked up by something like an hrp.

They should be fine. I guess you can have a bit more variety of colours compared to a school of tetras, If they breed you have a nice supply of free live food too. I've has them with angels and geos before with no problems. Currently I have columbian tetras, they would be my pick but serapes are nice too.

Livebearers like, mollies, swordtails, goodieds and platy's are perfect choices to keep with non predatory central American cichlids. They come from the same waters in the wild and have the same water requirements.
Provided your tank is big enough, they are perfect choices.

ah... I was thinking of using them for a honduran red point... basically a smaller, less aggressive convict with more color.

I was thinking a couple of marigold/blue wag platies would look nice with the hrp.

Should be fine with your hrp, they live in the same waters in nature and generally work better in aquariums.
