I have a JD and an Oscar along with some Buenos Aires Tetras in a 90 gallon. Lately the JD has been pecking at the Oscar, with a few times leaving some nasty scars. I felt bad and got a 55 for the JD to seperate them. (I havent moved the JD yet, I am planning to this weekend)

But anyway..

The past few weeks my JD has been digging thru all the sand which is about 3 inches to the bottom of the tank, and everytime I do a water change I always level out the sand, and by the following morning the little pit is back. I thought this was odd, only because this is new behavior for my JD. Is this normal for JD's? Is she trying to breed with my O? Any other ideas :-?

Sorry for such a long post.

Here is what the pits look like, I just did a WC this morning, so I am sure that by morning it will be larger.

My oscar is in this position a few times a day, and I think from the stress is starting to develop HITH. Hopefully by Sunday they will be seperated. I was hoping they would take their aggression out on the little tetras, but they ignore them.

my JD does the exact same thing with my gravel and large rocks... .it's insane in some areas in my tank their is about 4" of gravel and in the back where he likes to be their is barely .5" so i stoped leveling it and just left it

Nice to see people who would care that much about the fish =) to buy a new tank so your Oscar doesn't get killed or anything, great job with that =) how big is ur JD? Mine is about 6" now.

Thanks for the reply :) My Jd is about 4 inches, and doesnt cut my oscar a break. Im hoping that by tomorrow night I will have that new tank running, Ill post some pics when its done.

yeah the "digger" is a female. but i highly doubt she is trying to breed with the O. she is prolly just maturing enough to start her nesting. i wouldn't be to worried about the O, unless it apears to be a all out assaulted. with torn off fins and several wounds on the sides and face. well if you are intending breeding her, then use the 55 and get a good quality male for her (since she is pretty good quality herself). gl. and happy fish keeping.

Alot of cichlids move sand around. My Jag keeps all the sand pushed up around the glass perimeter and likes the center all dug out to the bottom. I let him keep the sand how he wants it...don't even bother leveling unless I feel like he needs something to do.

yeah i wouldnt worry about hith , thats usually caused by bad water , not stress i think you'd see ich from the stress. good to see you changin it up though , the tank looks nice, id love to go sand , it looks sooo much cooler than gravel substrate.

Thanks for the replies everyone.

you should get a male ebjd for her, they would make a great pair

Ive been thinking about that, but Id hate to get a male EBJD just to have her beat on him.

The nitrates never exceed 10ppm. I do water changes twice a week. Ill try to get some pics of the Oscars head later, maybe it isnt even HITH, I read that it is caused from stress from other tankmates and water quality.

True causes for HITH are still unknown at this time...only theories.
