Anyone feed earthworms straight out of the ground?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
...just get them out of the ground on a rainy day, wash them, and feed them?

This is what I have done. I've also heard that earthworms are MUCH more nutritious than feeder fish.:)

Of course for us that have cold Winters...it's tough to get earthworms this way all year long...with 12" of snow on the ground (and the ground being frozen)!;)

I'm from New England so I know what you mean. Given that its summer now I might run the hose over the lawn until some surface though.

Side question....If my lawn is treated with chemical ferts would this poison the worms, and in turn my fish?

Yes absolutely. I personally only feed earthworms from my yard because I forbid chemicals on my lawn. You are better off buying from a bait shop or just skipping worms all together if you have any doubts about chemicals. It's not worth it.

Yes, I've done this lots. Either after summer rains or right after I drench the lawn. Crickets, too. However it's pretty easy and more predictable at Walmarts, bait shop etc.

I don't think fertilizer would be a problem (nitrogen-phosp-potass), but insecticide would. As long as you aren't spraying around the flowers or lawn, I would think it's fine.

+1 better safe than sorry!

IMO, Of course! It's free live food, and as stated above it's much better than feeders. I have seen some horrible looking feeders who knows what they were fed... at least you know where this is coming from. I usually give them a thorough rinse followed by a long bath in a bit of aquarium water. My Jags go nuts for it!
