This is amongst one of the easiest cichlids to spawn, on par with Convicts. Females may breed when as small as two inches in length. This fish is easy to sex; usually have a largish black spot on the spiny portion of their dorsal fins that males lack; males have a hump-like area on their foreheads and longer, more pointed unpaired fins.
I've got a single Herichthys cyanoguttatus.I think it might be hard with just one since you don't have another specimen to compare it with(I either have amale or female, but not sure ).I'm sure someone on here can give you better help.
As mentioned before, a female texas will display a black splotch in the dorsal fin, and a male will not. It is very easy to distinguish them, even at small sizes. Here are some pics of my Male Tex.
When I first got him. Less than an inch, judging by the heater.
After about three months by a diff. heater, same thickness tho... I think.
After pairing up with a female con, and rough-housing a little.
And with his wife.
I've had him for about six months, and he's around 4inches now, though I'm sure he'd be larger if it weren't for the breeding? Maybe not.
I think I have a male then since theres no black blotch anywhere on the dorsal fin, theres only black blotches along the lateral line. I have a male to the best of this knowledge correct?
