Anyone have a African Tiger Odoe Pike?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Although I personally haven't had any (I want one SO BAD), theyr'e kind of like bigger, buffer freshwater barracudas. Although I think they might be more active, and need a big tank and filter with moving water (current) to thrive. I'd also like some more detailed answers to this question, haha.

I have had a few.The odoe pike is not an African tiger fish but rather a totally different characin species.

aren't they related to the gar characins? I could be entirely wrong.
They are related but odoe are not tiger fish.Tiger fish are in the Hydrocynus family and the odoe is the only member of the Hepsetus family if I am not mistaken.

Oh, okay. They actually don't look tiger fishey at all. They look more like my hujeta, especially the scale shape / definition and the markings. I want one REAAAALLY bad... Stupid tiny 75 gallon.

Do they need strong current to thrive in a tank?
Not in my experience with them. They are pretty slow moving and hang in suspension for the most but can move quickly when they want to.Great non aggressive predator that pretty much ignores what they cannot eat. Some have kept them in groups and observed different behaviors but I have only kept them singly.I was able to train one of them to eat floating pellets and freeze dried krill.
