I cannot find any threads about this color variant. I picked one up last week that had been abused and left to heal in the back room of my LFS for 8 months. I am always a sucker for fish I don't see often.... or in this case, never. Has any MFKer kept these guys? Any pics floating around except the few I can find on google? I only have a few pics that really don't do this guy justice. I just want to hear something about these fish... how they came about... background info and personal experiences with them (shorter lifespans, aggression, mating, blah blah blah). Anything really.

I think it is a male.

They're exactly the same as the normal jacks...just a different color. Think like the pink convicts. Treat them exactly the same as the normal jacks. They came about due to a homozygous recessive trait (probably from generations of inbreeding) that stops the production of dark pigment, melanin.

Yours is a girl, you can tell by the color on the gill plate.

Very nice pick up, she looks much better than the couple I've seen in person.

Thanks. I wasn't sure if there was some type of crossbreeding to get this variant. I have seen a few RD x JD that looked very similar but orange with a slight hump to their head.

So females can also have long pointy anal and dorsal fins? My reg JD female has somewhat rounded fins, but a lot of spangling on the gills.

Yes, females can have fairly pointy dorsal and anal fins. I know mine did. The most sure-fire way is the gill plate.

Haha, Thats a cool picture, It looks like he's saying "Get outta here"

I should have known rallysman has one. Thanks for sharing. Do you have any idea how old yours is? I see a lot of JD with deformed bodies as they get older. Osteoporosis is a bi*ch! My grandma shrank 4 inches. LOL
