i bought a needle fish a few days ago from a lfs. anyone have any luck feeding them pellets, or anything other than live food. this one seems to be picky. i just bought some fancy guppies and this thing just brutally wolfed down 3. what fish have people kept them with. right now i have it with a senegal bichir, a redtailed cat, and a chinese algae eater. all is well so far, but im a little worried that i might come home and find myself minus a fish.

the rtc stays on the bottom and the needlefish stays in the middle or top. my rtc pretty small right now, but later u think that can be a problem?

I'm pretty sure a fish that'll be 4 feet in a couple years and is highly predatory, is going to pose some problems.

Keep in mine the algae eater, bichir, and needlefish, are perfect shape for a rtc to eat.

in the next 6 months im getn 210 or bigger. if things are lookin good, i might go the route of a 550from glass cages. that will hold him for a while.

Sounds good. :)

How big are all of them now?

I had a needlefish. don't know what killed it. I had it with an O who loves live food, so I suspect him. I have a RD, and suspect him for obvious reasons. could've been my JD...

on the other hand, my roommate has kept one with the same basic assortment of fish for about 5 months, no problem.

never got mine to eat anything other than live. my roommate doesn't try. he likes to watch the needlefish eat.

I had my needlefish eating prepared fish got them completly off feeders

It takes time for a while they wouldn't eat anything other then feeders tried all sorts of stuff lossly tieing fishing line around food to move it around and tried tieing it to the filter and letting it move around in the current nothin then after a while they got use to me and would look and me and wait for food and get excited when i would come near the tnak so i would toss in feeders and see that they hit the food right when it hits the water so i tossed in a piece of shrimp right after i threw in a rosyred and with luck it grabbed it then spit it out and i knew i had somethin to work with

So after waiting a few days with no food i took a piece of Krill which is the same color as a rosyred and tossed it kinda hard into the tank and it was grabbed and then swalloed after that they started trying every thing with a little help some things i had to wiggle a little in front of them but in no time after that every thing was eaten Krill, Shrimp, Nightcrawlers, Squid, Fish fillets even a few pellets but that never worked we'll one time my smaller one got a pellet stuck to its teeth and swam around with it in its mouth for a few hours never tried pellets again

Long story short the key is trust wait till the fish sees you as the food sorce and trusts you then its usually only a matter of time till they start trying new foods but some never get off live food so best of luck to you
