Im thinking about getting one of these to filter the water going thru my powerhead (mostly so I dont suck up anymore goldfish in there)

What im worried about is how much it restricts the waterflow. I have a penguin 145 gph powerhead and its in a 55 gallon, kinda wanted a lot of current as the fish likes to play in the current.

I was also at home depot today and they have something very similar for pond pumps. The filter itself was very open, same diameter overall about 3 inches across. very free flowing for an aquarium but I dont think any BB could grow on it.....not sure which way to go.

I have several of them I use with air pumps... great little sponge filters...

I'm sure they would work fine with a powerhead... I can't say for sure how much they will slow the powerhead down though... If I see this thread after work I'll throw one on and see what it looks like...

They work great. Just make sure you get the coarse foam version if you are going to put them on a powerhead.

I have these in about 20 tanks, they work great. The pro version has teh courser sponge. I don't know how great they would fit on a powerhead. The link in the previous post has a replacement sponge which works great.

I used their coarse sponge on my canister filters for a while, but I found they did limit the flow a bit; they needed to be rinsed more often than I liked

I still use sponge filters on the intakes, but I switched to a much coarser sponge, i.e., larger holes. I bought some coarse filter foam and then just cut to shape

I just went with some pond pre-filters from home depot. The holes are really big and it wont restict the flow at all. It should never clog up and will keep large items from getting sucked up....might take months and months for BB to build up in it but thats ok. Tank will have a bio wheel 350 and a smaller AC filter on it as well. plus I got 2 for 5.50$

They work great. The one on the right fits on a maxi jet 1200 and pushes a ton of water I run these sponges on 4 or so tanks and some have the maxi jet setup some like the one above use air. I like them especially the weighted bottom.

(this is a Qtank temporarily housing the oscars)
