I don't currently use one as I haven't needed one thus far -- parameters have been great, current fish thriving -- but I want to eventually move my eels into my main tank until I get my bigger tank, as my other fish are far too big to be eaten and being that they are carnivorous, I'm going to need one. My filtration is currently a Marineland C530 (bio, carbon, mechanical) and 2 Cascade 300 HOB (strictly bio), plus tons of live rock and live sand. I am looking to get an external skimmer, preferably HOB as that's all that space permits unless I find someplace else to keep my supplies and clear out inside of my stand next to my canister filter. The ones I'm finding at my favorite LFS are pricey so I'd prefer to buy one from another hobbyist. I'm not having much luck on Craigslist. :(

Also, how difficult are they to install? I'm hoping to find one that's basically put-together-then-plug-and-play like my canister filter was because I suck at mechanical details (hence why I don't use a sump -- confuses the crap out of me). Thanks!

Most of them are going to have some kind of "break in period" that will have u frustrated thinking that it don't work. Have to give a couple days to getting it to work right. At least thats how mine was. From what ive heard, if you can get a remora skimmer, they are pretty much dialed and ready to go from the start. Theres a local guy here thats got a hob skimmer that he never used if you are willing to pay for shipping. You might be able to find something a lil bit closer though. http://columbusga.craigslist.org/for/1492357147.html

just make sure to read, read, and research as much as you can I will find some other great forms of filtration that might be a bit more easier and just as effective for your setup

Having had reef and FOWLR tanks now for 7 years, the best protein skimmer my brother and I have used have been the "remoras". They are hang on back, quiet, and efficient. You wont go wrong with one of these. Although there is little price difference, Ive always found the cheapest ones on amazon. About $174. Good luck, and WI fishkeepers rule!

Remora is a great filter have one as well and love it never had any issues with them and they did a nice job.

LOL these remora skimmers. They are good for a HOB skimmer , but HOB skimmers just dont add up anywhere near real in sump skimmers. What size tank do you want to put this on? When you get your bigger tank for the eels a sump would be the best choice. Then you just drop the skimmer in.

Very great little skimmer i had good use out of.

ASM, Trigger system, and Octapus systems being the best.

Then your best skimmer for the money would be the ultra compact sleek marineland skimmer. Its very very cheap over ebay and can handle some big tanks

for a good reef tank that is heavily populated and is a "true" reef tank the biggest remora would handle maybe a 40 gallon.... reef tanks require 3x the amout of skimmer for "true" reef tanks due to delicate corals.
