Ive been looking without luck for ancestors of Hydrocynus (tiger fish), Hydrolycus (payara), and wolf fish in general (erythrinus, hoplerythrinus, hoplias). If someone could point me towards some good info on ancestors of any of these guys it would be greatly appreciated, cheers!

I've only heard of the discovery (or, rediscovery) of Santanichthys diasii from the Cretaceous Santana Formation of Ceara, Brazil. The species was originally described as Lepidotes diasii until a closer inspection revealed evidence of a primitive Weberian apparatus that is found in Characins.

Hmm thanks for that oddball haven't came across it, looks like to could be related to payara? And possibly atf as I bet ancestors of both shared the same territories, like how polypterus remains have been found in south america
