Looking for anyone who has had experience with the "Flyer" Cichlid. Please share your knowledge as I'm looking to pick one up. Pics if you have one of these Cichlids would be greatly appreciated. Thanks
There was a thread not too long ago about them. Try searching this forum. I have a pair in my 180G community tank. They have not spawned yet. In general, I would say they are about middle of the road temperament wise. They don't start much with other fish, but don't back down if challenged. I got my pair from Dogofwar, and his big male is awesome. I would guess he is pushing 8-9".
They're great fish - interesting color, shape and personality. They turn BLACK when they breed...
I got a wild "Lago Nicaragua" pair from Rapps a couple years ago. I keep them in a 40g breeder with a couple of sponge filters and a box filter...couple of flowerpots and some sand. Keep the tank at about 78 and do weekly 30% or so water changes. I think Jon's are from me as are Diogenes' (Matt's)...
I feed mine NLS and other pellets and flakes...as well as worms and bugs for conditioning.
They'll start breeding at about 3-4".
Here's a picture (by Mike Hill) of my male from Aquafest this year... He's about 7-8" and actually bangs the glass to go after my finger..which is really unusual (kind of like a glassbanging severum )...
He's so cute. He's only about 4-5" right now. I dont even know if its a he or a she.
So far, its housed with fish more than twice it's size and not one problem. He's very inquisitive of the other fish and regularily hangs out right near my 13" Oscar and 10" Pike Cichlid
He seems to know how to avoid conflict.
Thanks for the info guys, I just purchased one from Rapps on a whim as I was ordering some Lyonsi from him also. The pics you guys have are great, based on your pics I won't be disapponited. I think I should have ordered a pair. Thanks!!!!
I have been keeping a group of 6 Cents for 3 years or so. Theyre very hardy and will usually take just about any food i offer them. Like jonclark96 says, they are pretty mild mannered and dont cause any hassle but will definitely not back down from other fish when challenged. Mine have grown to 6-7" + in 3 years and really colour up nicely once they hit 5". Mine are F1 from Lago Nicaragua, and sport a beautiful orange and green colour. Id recomend them to anyone, theyre a pleasure to keep and are definitely underated by a lot of fishkeepers here in the UK.
