anyone have jungle val plants in there cichlid tank?

im trying to grow some jungle vals in my all male tank. my fish dont bother my plants there just not doing well, ive had the plants for about 2 months in the tank they melted and then started growing new leaves but then the new leaves started rinkleing up and dieing, i bought a new bulb a few days ago for plant groth the plants start to grow n green a lil but not good. the roots of my plants are growing and pushing my plants out of the sand should i recover the roots with sand?
i was thinking of getting some root tabs but dont kno if they will harm my cichlids

I do, so far they have survived. Although, plants and cichlids together are case by case.... more often than not you end up replanting daily.

I'm trying some out and it seems they like to mow it down when it gets a certain length.

for some reason my tropheus and mixed tangs leave my plants alone.
