My precious baby rat Gato was making some unsettling coughing / sneezing / hiccupping noises last night. It looked like she was having some kind of spasm as well, and she was biting her front paw as she heaved.

We have a vet appointment tomorrow, but in the meantime, has anyone had a similar experience?

Sometimes the whole apartment gets cold overnight, but the rat's bedroom is the warmest room in the house, and she has a lot of bedding and a snuggle partner to keep her warm.

However, I did take her w/ me on an outing last week, and it was colder than I expected. I'm thinking that's the culprit, and I'm kicking myself so hard.

But from what I've been reading online today, it's sounds like a respiratory problem, which shouldn't be all that serious. So I'm crossing my fingers and praying a lot until we get to the vet tomorrow.

I seriously love this little girl. She's like a human child to me.

Here's a photo for good measure:

Looks just like a rat I used to have named Benny. How old is she? I think you are probably right about the resperation problem. If that's the case a plain old antibiotic will probably take care of it.

i know u love it and all,but they r like 5 bucks.rats r hardy things too,u dont have to worry about how cold it gets,my cousin used to keep them outside in the winter until we killed them/fed them all to snakes

We've had rats that got the sniffles like that (happens a lot). The vet should be able to give you some medicine for it. we got some stuff that you mix up in a 2 liter and give to them with a dropper. It works well. If you do get some mix it up and keep it refrigerated, you'll need it in the future:)

Also (bestincali), not all rats are just 5 dollar rats. We keep Dumbo rats, and they can be more expensive. Not that it matters, they're still pets and deserve the same treatment.

That's right. And for the record, Gato was $7. But it's not her market value that makes her precious to me. And if she died, going to Petsmart and buying another one would not be the same thing.

And yeah, she's had sniffles, but this was MUCH worse. If it had happened to a human I might have called 911.

I was putting it lightly, I meant severe hacking and brown crusty nose lol. I'll ask my girl what the med was when she gets home, she might remember.
