im looking to try and breed some senegals but cant really find any info.
can anyone help?

i got close twice.
my senegals bred in the morning before i went to school.
i didnt bother doing anything so the eggs got eaten.
once again the next day.
but i left them again.
too busy with school.

its been done but its hard one hard part is they love to eat there babies polypterus make horrible parents and the fry like to eat each other to so if you do breed them you won't get many babies

i know they like to eat the babies

Mine bred twice so far, with the courtship descibed here in these forums and fairly extensively in the primer and a section of Jurassic Fishes.

Both times I was unaware what changes had occurred to trigger spawning, although I suspect conditioning and water conditon / changes had some effect. Both occurred over the summer months when there would be more ambient light (& less tank lights on). I had noticed the male pursuing the female all over the tank, which was unusual.

They scattered their eggs into a clump of java moss the first time, and none hatched. The second time I didn't know they had spawned, and sucked up 18fry while vaccuming the gravel near a large java fern they usually hang out near. These went to a rearing tank but I was unsuccessful getting them to eat. None survived past 12 days.

In both cases the temp was 80-81 degrees, nitrates low, pH 8.0, slightly hard water. They bred at ~ 11", despite the presence of other, larger poly's in the tank.

If I get another spawn I'll do things a bit differently, and will post pics this time.

i also had a failed spawn... here are the links i posted at the time.. both have some pics also

i read somewhere on another forum i think. some guy got his senegals to spawn regularly. dont remember all of it but these are the steps i recall...
- have mature male and female
- fatten them up with extra feedings
- keep the water clean and temp 81-83 F
- once they are nice and plump (about 2 weeks) hold feedings
- get a nice thick patch of java moss in tank attached to wood or rock for easy removal
- drain water to one half
- lower temp to 75-78 F (basically turn off heater and let it get to room temp)
- feed half normal amount every other day.
- wait a week or so then slowly add cold water every day untill tank filled or spawning occurs...

this is supposed to mimic the drought and then rainy season when they spawn. i also remember he had a diy spray bar that sprinkled the surface of the water like rain drops.

rearing fry is very difficult from what i read. i dont have any usefull info on this for you at this time. except have a spare 10 gallon tank for the eggs because the adults will eat them. :(

good luck :)
