There seems to be a lot of them out there and most/all? seem to be babies or at best sub adults.Just curious if anyone has managed to raise their RTC to adulthood sucessfully.

My brother has a 24" rtc, would that be considered an adult?

I have to dig up some pics of my 3' RTC that died due to a weekend power outage at the school i teach at. He was close to 8 years old. I have grown a few to the 30-36" mark but never any bigger. Ironically my largest one was grown in my smallest tank, a 150 wide which has the same footprint as a 180 just 4" shallower. I currently have 3 RTC's that are but juvi's in the growing stages, with the biggest one not even a foot yet. I kept a beautiful 30+ incher in my 2500 gallon indoor pond for about 3 years and he stopped growing at 32". He was healthy as a horse, and as wide as a school bus, but just stopped growing. I'm always a little skeptical of the supposed 4-5' size some say, In a 300 gallon tank or a thousand gallon pond i dont see this being the norm.

Just my experience.

if you are ever in north carolina go to a place in hickory called the china house. They have one that is 3ft. and the bigger one looks like about 3 1/2 -4ft. range. He's been in there for at least 15 years.

Levi and I went to an lfs in Indy, or somewhere nearby. They had a big indoor pond with a giant RTC. It had a sign that said "Keep hands out, I bite." I asked if I could get in, if I kept my hands out of the water.

Fifteeen years?...wow..I guess that's part of why adult RTC s might be rare if they take that long to grow up.
That would suggest collecting them from the wild might be a bad idea too since if they take so long to grow to adulthood, they most likley take a long time to reach breeding age.

I'm not skeptical of their adult size at all because I have seen an adult RTC at the Boston aquarium. Actually I might be going to the Boston aquarium fairly soon. My mom asked what I wanted for my birthday and I said Boston aquarium:)...so that's why the RTC was on my mind. I really enjoyed seeing the RTC there a few years back.

dallas aquarium has 3 or 4 they look to be 5 feet.......200000gallon tank:D :D :D
