Any of your MFKers into upgrading or building computers? For Christmas, instead of buying a new computer, I decided to upgrade my old windows 98 Gateway computer (Only god knows how long its been used) it runs pretty smoothly actually ... probably need a new motherboard, driver, and such but at least I got the case and such

Planning to make it run faster for gaming and photos, videos, music so more memory

Does anyone know where are good places to buy upgrades...?

and also any forums online where they talk about this stuff? thanks

newegg.com is probably the best place to get computer stuff. fry's electronics usually has good deals also on motherboard/cpu combos if you live near one. it's not really worth it to upgrade an old machine like that. you'll probably end up replacing everything. the case is probably a different form factor too so you'll probably end up buying a new one. power supply would have to be upgraded also if you're running more powerful cpus. go to overclockers.com. that's the forum i go to when it comes to computers.

I get most of my parts from Tigerdirect.com

Thats what I was thinking the same - just building a new one. However, the old computer.. I dont want to waste it and I want to try to save money.. the monitor is a flat screen im keeping that for sure...

I agree with the others. Newegg.com and tigerdirect are the best by far...

Older computers make good dedicated network servers...

:iagree:

They're awesome.

GEAR XS TIGER DIRECT NEWEGG DONT BOTHER WITH THAT OLD GATEWAY CASE, A NEW GAMER CASE WILL ONLY SET YOU BACK ABOUT $40, GET A ASUS MOTHERBOARD WITH
AT LEAST A 775 SOCKET, INTEL P QUAD 3.0G, DDR2 MEMORY AT LEAST 1 GIG, THEN GET A NVIDIA 8 SERIES PCIE 16 GRAPHICS CARD. ALL THIS SHOULD SET YOU BACK ABOUT 400

yeh... what do you mean turn it into a network servers?

yeh.. might as well just build a new computer

Older computers make great task dedicated machines (file keepers, print servers, diagnostic aids, psyical firewalls....ECT.) and are simple to add to an existing home network. That old 1.2 gig p4 might not be able to keep up on WOW but can certianly keep all of your auto maintance records in the garage...
