Hey ladies and guys-

I bought a group of the Gym. blue neons, and have searched the internet on any information-which isnt much! i know they are from Uruguay, and are Eartheaters- but does anyone know anything more about them?

I have them in a 90 gallon with a red shoulder Sev, and a group of 4 Honduran Red Points..

im hoping these fish are compatible? they seem to be so far..

any information would be greatly appreciated as far as diet, water parameters (they have peat and driftwood right now) and their ph level is 7.6

thanks so much!:screwy:

I have a pair of 'em, but I haven't had 'em long enough to give any expert advice . . .

I keep a pair of blue neons with an EBJD and 2 female convicts, no problems . . . I also keep a pair of gymnogeophagus meridionalis (similar species) with similar CA/SA cichlids, again no problems . . . my tanks are planted, medium-soft, with a Ph around neutral

I have read, and will try, that the gymnogeophagus species will benefit from a short period - -2 to 3 months - - of living at lower temps, like high 60s . . . I am going to put both pairs of gymno into a 30G long and try lowering the temp for a few months to see what effect it has

thanks you two for the info! im reading on gymno care now.. i have never owned eartheaters.

the cooling off period-is that just for breeding purposes? i dont plan to breed them, and i turned the heater down this evening and will check it again in the morning-i had read that the gymnos need cooler temps than most other fish... so i was going to lower it to maybe 74F or somewhere where it feels tepid-but okay for the RBP's

thanks again for the info! its much appreciated-Mel

It's not just for breeding, although when it starts to warm up again they will begin to breed. Down into the 60s is fine, my house stays at about 68 in the winter so I will most likely just let my tank drop down to that.

They are from south east Uruguay which has a temperate climate, same latitude as Atlanta Georgia. It still is S. America and the water gets very hot in summer. They can handle water temps form 40-90F. Very hardy fish, If you don't plan to bred them just keep them at tropical temps, mid-70's is fine. I don't put heaters in any of my Uruguay tanks, but I don't keep other fish with them either that like warmer temps. They eat any type of prepared or frozen foods, are substrait spawners and easy to bred and raise the fry. Ken

thanks FSM and fishfarm! i really love these fish-theyre beautiful even as juvies. i have been reading more on the gymn. species in general. right now the little guys are tearing up the algae in the tank! lol.. they are very active and seem to get along with the red shoulder severum and HRP's-im going to keep the temp in the mid 70's.

thanks again!

you also asked about food; just FYI, mine eat the same food as the other cichlids in my tank: Hikari cichlid gold, omega one pellets, shrimp, etc. . . .

for the most part, they don't behave differently; my pair of gymno meridionalis remind me of less-aggressive Firemouths, and the blue neons are just a little bit less aggressive than that . . .
