Anyone Keep Pumpkinseeds?

I just curious to know if they can live together with Bluegills?

Are Pumpkinseeds territorial? If you could compare them to Longear Sunfish, would you say that Longears are much more aggressive about territory than Pumpkinseeds or vice versa?

Probably in the spring or summer I will try to catch some from a local lake and throw him in my aquarium. But I dont want to find out in the long run that my Bluegill and Pumpkinseed will be swapping bites at each other all the time.

Yes

Yes

From personal experience I would say mine were every bit as territorial as my BGs were. What is the tank size and tankmates (other than the gill)? I had a set-up in a 90gal with one male pks, smaller perch, and a big male gill. The gill was more aggressive during feeding while the seed was def more aggressive in defending his space near a log and some weeds. I felt he had more personality than the gill, but that is just me. You will see better colors on the the seed.

Well currently I have a 75 G tank with a 10 inch Channel Cat and a 7 inch Bluegill and a 5 inch Largemouth. The Channel cat doesnt bother anyone really.... The Bluegill is a lot bigger than the Channel Cat in girth. So he cant fit in his mouth. The Largemouth keeps to himself and the channel cat doesnt bother him either.

So far I've had this tank for 7 months now and I haven't had any problems in terms of my fish not getting along with one another.

I will have to upgrade in the future, but for now this will have to do for them since I have to keep spending all my money fixing this crappy Nissan Sentra I have.

I am running an Eheim 2217 Canister filter and a Emperor 400 on the 75 Gallon tank.

I had to get rid of 3 Longear sunfish last time because the Male was just picking on everyone....It was overly territorial!!!!

The Bluegill is an angle compared to how aggressive the Longear Male was.

Do you guys think it would be a problem if I threw in a 5 or 6 inch Pumpkinseed in the summer????

No don't throw anymore fish in that 75. By summer your LMB should be getting pretty big and same goes with the channel. Your going to need to get a new tank man.

Yeah yeah, thats what everyone said last year when I got first got them....

"DUDE!!!!! They are going to be giants in like 3 months!!!!!!!!!! UPGRADE UPGRADE!!!!!!!!!!!"

7 Months later they grew like one inch a piece lol:screwy:

I would not put another fish in the tank. That's just me and I don't harp on over crowding. The seed may disrupt the balance you have in the tank. If you wait until you upgrade to put one in it could work out better. Just my thoughts....

Could I throw a small Pumpkinseed in a 30 G?

Yep, but if you are going to try to grow him out (for later transfer into a bigger tank) you might as well wait and catch a large colorful male in the spring. They grow slow and you would prob be happier with a big ole male. Once you get the bigger tank (or whatever you're doing) you can transfer him in.
