I was curious if anyone here keeps any marine fish from the socal area? Small ones such as kelpfish, blennies, gobies or bigger fish such as sheephead, blacksmith, or kelp bass? etc.

I don't, but I'm interested in seeing any responses. I plan to set up an east coast marine biotope next year.

Very nice tank!

I am looking to do the same thing someday. I used to keep over 54 fish including a garibaldi, halibut, several kelp bass, horn shark, several swell sharks, and countless other invertebrates at UCSB as a husbandry assistant. I miss my old pets :( It was an open system though, since we were right on the beach, so water was just pumped in and out of the tanks. I figure if i wanna do a closed system i'd need a chiller and figure out a way to do water changes - but I have no idea about keeping a marine aquarium, and no money/room for that right now (I am barely starting a freshwater tank, lol), so it's gonna be something for the (not too distant) future.

I figure when I start out I can try tidepool organisms, probably more forgiving in terms of temperature.

How do you do your water changes? Are you close to the beach?

a chiller is an absolute must. i tried without one and it was pretty hit and miss. i do water changes (when i do) using synthetic sea water mixed at home.

it really isnt any more difficult than a freshwater system, just a tad different.
