I just picked up a couple dozen guppies and have noticed 2 look very different from the others. I believe they may be large female gambusia but before I cull them to keep them from messing with my breeding project I wanted to be sure they weren't large guppies.

Anyone know how to tell the difference?

Do you have pics of those fish? Gambusia is also known as mosquito fish and are slightly more aggressive compared to guppies. I find them less prolific when compared to guppies.

Gambusia do get a lot more nippy, but they are pretty versatile when it comes to being kept outdoors and such, being temperate (assuming it is one of the US species).

Take note of the head / back of the fish...

Gambusia are flat topped to allow them to swim just under the surface tension of the water to catch insects and larva. Guppies have a slight bit of a nose if you will.

And GAmbusia will eat the guppy fry before the other guppies can think about it :nilly:.

I have no batteries for my camera :( Based on that link they're guppies. Those things were at least 2" though. I still have one but the Male RD hit the other one like a freight train.

Pics when you can. I find that large gambusia will have fewer fry than guppies that are about 2/3 it's size. Guppy fry also grow more quickly.
