I like the Current Satellite compact lighting systems because of the duality features (white + actinic lighting + a lunar led).

Not sure of the T5's benefits in its own right but also in comparison to compacts.

thks all

You might want to post this in the marine section. If you are looking for lighting for a freshwater tank, then anything will work. Lights with actenics look better in my opinion.

I use a T5 Retrofit with a 10k daylight and one actinic. Really makes the colors pop. A retrofit installed in the canopy looks better than a compact setup placed on top, however there are some cool features that the compacts have like moonlighting and integrated timers.

I've used both and never really developed a hard preference for either . . . that is to say, I like them both just fine. I do find that CFs run hotter, but that's about my only complaint.

I think the general direction is towards T5s these days . . .

I like the T-5's. They are cheaper to run, don't get hot like CF, the bulbs have a useful life span of 18 to 24 months and are a lot cheaper to replace.

thks all! I guess I should have asked about the diff. prior to my purchase (now knowing T5's less cost to run & to replace bulbs & not as hot). thought I was getting such a great deal ($79 36" dual satellite) & liked the dual lighting system.

hey loco, nice set up! retrofit? is like a DIY?

It is DIY but it is very easy to install, All it involves it screwing four screws into the canopy to secure the retrofit light reflector. Check out awesome video of how to do it by lafishguy.
