I have a parrot cichlid, about 6-7 inches long, so its pretty much fully grown. She's a strange one when it comes to behavior. I've seen her swim up-side down, chase off fish twice her size and is generally quite hyper-active. She shares a 125 gallon with a 6-inch oscar, partitioned off so both dont fight. The parameters are all in the normal and I feed her once a day.
When I approach the tank, she swims up to greet me and whizzes around the thank before she starts digging at the sand. After a few seconds, she'll swim back up to me for a few seconds and then go back to digging. She does this repeatedly, sometimes for more than a half-hour at a time!
Do other fish do this as well? She seems like a reasonably intelligent cichlid (in the past when the heater was broken, she would keep swimming between my hand and the heater repeatedly. i noticed the temp drop a few hours later. during ammonia spikes while the tank was cycling, she would scoop up sand and blow it at me). Funny to think that something the size of your hand is trying to communicate with you.
Cheers
