These fish were given to me by a friend that was taking down his tank. I searched all over and can't find anything. The bigger one is a male smaller female. 
Anyone know what this fish is?

Conditions permitting you may want to add more to alleviate any con specific aggression. I have 3 and think 5 would be more ideal. That said, they only loosely school so unless you have a large tank or tankmates they may act closer to a normal cichlid than a schooling fish.
They are with a couple red tail barbs, two silver dollars, and an angel. They aall seem to school together. No aggression problems to speak of
Can't rule out the possibility of them being a pair either, hopefully you continue with smooth sailing!
Heros/Mesonautus festivum = Flag Cichlid?

Heros are the genus of severum, mesonauta is the genus festivum and flag cichlid is a nickname for it.
