Anyone know what this is? Was told minnow family

I saw these at the LFS, quick and some color and I thought maybe they would make a good dither fish. Their color is down due to being moved but they don't have the sence to hide.

Anyone know what they are? I was told that they are related to minnows.

They look like bitterlings, cool minnow they need a clam to breed. They are native to europe i think would be a good temperate fish.

My lfs has some, they call them red headed minnows...

I agree with Stonecat, they appear to be bitterlings. Interesting fish, would love to keep them myself sometime.

Its a cyprinid. Notropis lutrensis

I'm 100% certain it's a red shiner (Cyprinella lutrensis).

So you're right Vanimate but your book is just a little old

Repair, I went fishing today and we used a seine net to catch crawfish for bait. Well bycatch are literally dozens of those guys so dont pay for them come down here and get as many as you want for free along with alot of other really cool and beautiful natives. Seining the creek is really fun. Even though today we targeted specifically crawfish to use for bait (we ended up with about 100 in less then half an hour) we caught several different species of darters, shiners, suckers, longear sunfish, baby small mouth bass and more.

Here is a longear sunfish I caught and kept a couple years ago.
