Just picked this up at the grocery store, I'm sure it's a common species, just not too sure which it is. Anyone recognize it? Sorry for the bad pic, it's still acclimating.
Synbranchus marmorata - marbled swamp eel. Grows to 60". Keep a heavy lid on these guys as they're great escape artists. Not to be trusted with other fish. Bites to humans can result in loss of digits. Can survive in oxygen depleted waters due to its air-breathing abilities. Will roam about on land to forage for food or find another body of water (reason for a sturdy cover).
Thanks for the info Oddball. I had to put it in my water changing bucket while I went to an engagement party in NJ. Well, I'm not gonna lie; I picked it up as a detritous eater for my P tank (in my quest to find a suitable/stable tankmate)....Suffice it to say, that didnt last long, the minute I put him in there, the baby cons (who won't get eaten by the Ps) descended on him. Once the Ps took a few bites he was bleeding all over and I had to take him out, it stopped bleeding in a few minutes and he seems fine now. I wasn't even planning on putting it in there for the long haul, just a test before I quarantined him. Once i dropped it in the tank, I could see it was a burrower; and a little info digging seems like it will live well in brackish water. I guess it will have to live in a high salt feeder quarantine tank ( I don't have one yet since I stopped using feeders, but this is a good reason to start one up). Well, back to daily gravel vacs for my P tank. At first i wasn't sure if I should start a new tank for him or freeze him and use it for P food, but he looks pretty interesting, for $2.50 ($4.50 a pound, and it's about 18"long), I can't complain about a new species for the resume .
Hey Oddball, that's a Monster one you got there. How long have you had it? How fast did it grow? Any more info would be much appreciated. I'm assuming since it's a carnivorous eel it should eat the same foods as my Ps, I have lots of different food choices in the fridge/freezer, so I'll see what it likes best tomorrow, for now it seems to eat pieces of shell on shrimp.
It got about 4 bites on the tail area. Right now the Ps are still young, around 4-5". The bites weren't too bad more "testing/nipping" bites than eating bites, but this eel is a bleeder.
