I am not sure which section to put this in, but there has been this "brown furry stuff" growing on some driftwood in my tank.. I just saw if for the first time about a week ago. I wasnt sure if this is ok for my JD or what. I dont even know what it is  It is very soft, here is a picture..

There is also some spots on the back of the wood also.

If anyone knows if this is ok for my fish or what it is, please tell me, thank you.

looks like black brush algae, or beard algae, I think theres some other names too, never had it but from what Ive read and heard its almost impossible to get rid of it but others might have some suggestions, ive heard youve got to bleach the tank and then that may get rid of it, you should throw that driftwood away though, hopefully others will have more to say. also, its a water born algae, the spores cant survive in the air so it probablly came in with the last thing you bought for your tank at the fish store

I appreciate the response golcondorus, I havent added anything to this tank since I got my JD and that was in May. I hope Im not going to have to bleach it, but if thats what i have to do then I will do it. Any comments are welcome :)

Rather than immediately going into fish tank appocolypse, why not just take that piece of driftwood out and pour boiling water over it. Scrape the spots after wards and rinse with more boiling water.

The water does not have to be boiling at the time of the pour but it just needs to be significantly hotter than the algae lives in.

That may help but chances are the spores are already in your water column and your screwed. Sorry this stuff is very hard to get rid of I had to wipe out my whole tank last time i got some.

You might just want to try and get used to it  it doesn't look that bad ;)

I agree it doesnt look bad at all, I like it. I was wondering if it was harmful to my fish, thank you for the replies everyone.

It does not hurt the fish but can spread throughout the tank, getting unsightly.
