Im not sure what victorian species they are reffering to but i know slight differences are noted in frontosa species in Lake Tang. It is believed that the various types of frontosa found in the lake have slight differences in color, stripes, nuchal humps, teeth and scales. It is widely believed that these differences occur because the fish groups do not widely disperse in the lake and different variants stay with their own in a geographic region. So that is not suprising that differnt groups of a species in a lake have different color features and they use these features to attract a mate etc...It certainly is interesting. I believe cichlids are one of the most highly specialized lifeforms on earth. I believe they all came from one or two ancient sources and have since colonized nearly all the continents. Amazing when you think about it.
