Hey guys,

I have a 125g with a nearly 2ft long pacu. He's a great pet and all around good guy, but lacks manners sometimes.

We got him small and had no clue he would quickly outgrow the 55, so we got the 125 to help him, and cannot go any bigger.

Does anyone have a large aquarium that can house such a beast?

He works great as a trash compactor also.

Thanks,
Tyler

I'm in Newtown, CT. Southwestern corner of the state, close to bridgeport.

My father wants to build a tropical fish pond for him outdoors. However, keeping the water above 60* would be quite difficult in the winter.

We were thinking we would put it close to the septic fields, which are probably a good 10-20 degrees hotter than the average ground temps. Then we'd put a bubble over it for greenhouse effect during the winter, and then heat it using some sort of electric or maybe even propane heater. But these are all just ideas. My guess is that the pond would prove extremely costly to heat during the winter and it would turn to a koi pond.

If our house had a ground floor area that wasn't hung over the basement, we'd make an indoor terrarium for the fish and our cockatiel to enjoy!

Ever consider an indoor pond in the basement? Lots of people do it and it is easy to do. Go to the main page and scroll down to the pond section.

I have an empty 150 I could put him/her in for a while--I'm getting a 300+g in Feb==I'm 15 minutes from you--glenn

Glenn,

If you'd like him, that would be great.

He's in great health and i could take some pictures of him if you'd like. We've been feeding him nuts, lettuce, and the pepper stems and what not after we make salads for dinner. He's also into carrots, celery, basically anything that fits in his mouth. He will eat small fish if he's hungry, unless they are under 2", then he'll just eat them regardless. He is not agressive unless threatened. The only fish he's ever faught with was an oscar that tried to defend itself (bad idea). The oscar was about 1 foot long, and when the oscar flared up instead of hiding, he got his face bitten off.

The pacu swims happily with a JD and a Managuense, because the two cichlids know to just hide if the Pacu gets upset.

I can drive him to your house. I'm guessing the best mode of transport would be a 55 gallon trash bin, or maybe some sort of giant tupperware storage container.

We did consider "flooding the basement" and it would be easy for us- my father is a contractor/carpenter and i've worked with him for years and also work as a mechanic, so we're very handy with that sort of thing. However, i don't think anyone would go in the basement. The setup of the house just isn't very conductive for that sort of thing, and i'm afraid he'd just spend a lot of time in the dark.

If you giving -I'll come---No teaching this week...Give me a couple of days to get a large T-ware---I can always use a larger one.---I like it that you're feeding him the way he should be Not like some people do.glenn--Where in Newtown...My e-mail duretteg@yahoo.com....Do you blanch your veggies for him?

We do not generally blanch the veggies we feed him. He hasn't had peas in a long time, but i believe his digestive tract is in good shape. My proof is from the massive poops he leaves all over the tank. haha!

I'm sure he will freak out quite a bit, and turn silver/white during the whole ordeal, but he is a very hardy fish.

His favorite food seems to be almonds and romaine lettuce. Although he does get a wide variety of everything.
