At my local fish store, they have two gar that I'm considering. They say they are Boullegera Gar, (Pronounced Bowlegara) I don't know I that is spelled correctly. These gar are about 5 inches but don't know how big they will get, or much about them at all. The owner of the store said he thought they would get a to be 18" max, and said they don't grow nearly as fast as the florida, spotted, or longnose gar. Anyone heard of this name before?

not a true gar (family Lepisosteidae), but in fact a pike-characin (family Ctenoluciidae).--

Ha, I thought they might be pike. I mentioned that too, and he said no, its a gar. I'm pretty familiar with all gar available for aquariums, and this name didn't ring a bell. They Kinda Looked like gar, but I guess gar kinda look like pike when small, at least the small gar for sale around here. Maybe they're all pike?

boulengerella is what they have.
pike characins that resemble gars.
the more common species get around 12" in captivity.
i believe slightly larger in the wild.
not true gars.

the spotted gar grows pretty long but it takes forever i have an alligator gar and i only been having him for 3months and he is already 12inches long
