I was just looking at new fish in at Aquascapeonline.com and noticed they had some Jaguar catfish in. Not really being a catfish guy, but being interested in most fish I decided to check out the profile of the fish. I came across this-

"If you hear strange sounds from the aquarium at night, it is probably not ships meeting in deep fog – it is Jaguar catfishes trying to stake out their territories. Rivaling the Jaguar catfishes will rotate the spines of their pectoral fins at the base; thereby producing a sound somewhat similar to a foghorn or tuba."

Does anyone have one of these fish, and even better have a vid of the sound they make? I find it fascinating and would love to see some footage of them making the sound. I found a few vids of the fish online, but none of any of the fish making noise....does this even happen?

I have always wanted one but just haven't gotten around to getting one yet, but I would imagine it would make the same nosies that most other catfish make, I have herd that noise when pulling channel catfish out of the water to get the hook out

Ahhhh, I have seen the light. Thanks, Mike.

I have heard a Channel catfish before. I thought the noise came from the throat on a Channel cat, and still don't know exactly where it comes from, but now I can at least get a idea what kind of noise they make (Jaguar cats). Kinda like a croaking or grunting. I didn't realize they croaked in defense with other fish, never made that connection from just catching catfish and hearing it. Pretty cool stuff.

Looking around online at some of the specimens, they are beautiful catfish, I'm surprised more people don't own them.

get a hold of knifegill, he got a recording of his striped rafaels grunting a while back, the sound should be similar with jaguars

no offense but aquascape is pricy compared to snookn21 he got some in cheap.

back to the topic- yeah mine croaks/grunts when I have them out of the water

there is one for sale at one of lfs' in denver- i think they wanted 70 bucks or something. i was really tempted to get one myself

I have one. Stunning looking fish though I had to remove it from the main tank as it was just too small (8" now) so it's living in a 55g grow out with some baby Hoplerythrinus.

In regards to the noise. It's very true and whe you don't expect it, it's quite disconcerting. A few years ago, I had it in a 150g where it shared a spot beneath some wood with a 15" Polypterus Ornatapinnis. They were fine for the most part but every now and again they would fall out, usually when the Poly. moved and squashed the little cat. It used to be loud enough that it would wake me up at night and it took a little while for me to work out what the hell it was.
