was wondering if any of you do this and what you use as a predicted if you do. The case is really bulky and would prefer to run the pump without it.

Wanted to see experiences. Thanks all!

I run mine without the case, as long as I tuck the extra mesh from my media bags under the media so that it doesn’t get sucked into to impeller I don’t have any issues. The cage if used in a pond would keep branches and fish out of the pump but that’s not a concern in a sump , unless you have a fish down there in time out. Tried it for a while with a pond prefilter for a bit but it seemed like more maintenance with minimal to no benefit.

When I run them without the case (if the sumps is too small to comfortably it) I also add some kind of screen and/or sponge to keep chunks out of the intake.
But I do like the case, as it keeps out everything fromsnail, bits of wood, even small stones away from the intake, yet doesn't impede flow, and gives longer times between maintenance.
Those little yellow plastic screws are less than adequate
Below is one in a 55 gal sump.

Thank you. Space is the issue for me. I’m going to find a sponge prefilter for mine.

I run all mine without the box. Personally I find it clunky in the home aquaria and would only use in an actual pond or something.
