Hi all I have a very small farm pond in my yard in fl and recently discovered I have mayan cichlids in it. I caught one that has a black tail on it and put it back for fear of killing it as he was pretty big . But I did take a few pics.20160728_153404.jpg I have since seen a smaller one with the same tail that I have been trying to catch they both seem really healthy and I see them in the pond every day. Any one seen a mayan like this before I'm not sure if this might be something cool or not.
The grey only showed when he was stressed it stays black most of the time.

Check out the one upper left, this is a pond near Everglades City

Mayans vary greatly from Cenote to Cenote in the Yucatan, where they are endemic, some have bands, some don't, as in the video below. Some (like the ones found in salt water off Isla Mujeres are very red.

Mine must be an Imperial Mayan

It actually looks as if was previously wounded. The black could be healing process. First pic shows possible wound better

Something similar happened w/ my robertsoni. It lasted a few weeks and it was the only time in 7 years! Not sure why only the rear section. At first I thought breeding colors, but she laid eggs before and never turned black like this.
