Just curious has anyone bred their own meal/super worms? I plan to do just that, figure it'll save me some money and time down the line. Plus give me plenty of worms to feed the fishies.

Any thoughts or tips? :D

Meal worms is easy. Just put a bunch of them in a container with dry earth and lots of stale and hard bread and meal. Put them inside there and forget about them ( except for giving them bread and meal). Ensure that absolutely no moisture gets in the container.100% dryness. I allways have production of these guys.

In relation to the Superworms (zoophobas )I am giving you what is given to me: need to be placed individually in containers ( ancient photo film containers( drill holes in it ) or a piece of wood full of drilled holes where each worm can put put herself. It will, eventually, turn into a bug. those bugs mate and there you go...( keep plenty meal on hand in the system ).

I know guys who do this (and just phoned to confirm )

Any doubt, raise your hand, I'll ask again

Miguel

Thanks bro. That's pretty much what I dug up about the breeding of them.

Tired of making trips to the lfs to pick up worms when I run low, so why not just mass breed these buggers...:D

I've heard of people keeping them in bran (the cheapest kind) cos it's dry and they can eat it. I've personally never bred them because it's smellya dn unsightly and they're cheap here anyway ... maybe oneday when I open my LFS.. :D

We used a cardboard ice creamtub tub filled with oatmeal to raise mealies
had it for years just add more oatmeal -Anne

How long does it take the Super worms to reproduce??

Thanks for the comments/replys.

Yeah, I'm going to order 100 or so of the SW and see how it goes. Good thing I have a spare 10g tank and plenty of plastic bins. :naughty:

Hey Tongue, from what I found on the net, it can take anywhere from 4-8 weeks to see some babies...depending on how many beetles matured it can be up to 1000 babies! :WHOA:

How bad does it smell!! If I did this it would have to be in my basement..

Exactly! That's why I'm going to put them in my garage. :grinno:

I used to breed them when I kept herps. I house MW in a 3 gal aquarium w. 2" of wood shavings and fed them apple/potatoe slices. It worked quite well.
