anyone try keeping newts or salamanders

I currently keep a spotted salamander and blue spotted salamander. I have also kept eastern newts and a few of the smaller lungless salamanders. The setup depends on the size of the animal and what kind of habitat it comes from. Most newts live in water and should be treated pretty much like turtles. Others like the members of the mole salamander family require a land based environment with hideing places and such. What species are you looking into?
not really sure what kind yet, have a 70 gallon long tank. Id like a tank with a mix of species, just starting to do research on it though. Saw a tank at a pet store near me I liked, had newts, frogs, toads in it, half had peat moss and then sloped into water with a waterfall
Oh yes, I love newts, you should do a google image search for vivarium and terrarium.

If your making an aquarium out of that I'd recomend a few axolotls. Completely neotenic mole salamanders, Ambystoma Mexicanum. They grow all four limbs and reach about 9 to 10 inches in length, but retain thier feathery gills and remain totally aquatic. I own two, and there pretty cool. They take pretty much what ever food ends up infront of their faces, and arent that hard to keep.

I had an eastern newt, but in a community fishtank. Some barbs nipped at it. Salamdars are more terrestrial, and need moist soil or something similar. I've considered axolotls and wondered what fish they were compatible with them.
From what I've read, once it reaches a certain size, its more like the fish's compatibility with the Axolotl, because it won't bother it, its more often, from what I've read, the fish nipping the Axolotl's gills. And to what size fish to keep em with, i think this goes back to the larger than the Axolotl's head type deal. If your interested, definitely check out www.Axolotl.org. It's a seriously awesome site. Axolotls aren't mudpuppies, I believe they are really closely related. Though as I understand it they are closer to tiger salamanders and can actually breed with tiger salamanders.
