I just got a half lb of freezedried krill from yourfishstuff.com. It looks like a great product but when I opened it, i smelled what seems to me like ammonia. The packages are vacuum sealed. I called the company but they were already closed. Any thoughts or experiences?
My FD krill don't smell like ammonia.
If it does, most likely it hasn't been freeze-dried and seal properly and is beginning to break down into ammonia.
Best is to directly call the company. But I advice you just throw them away or use them to cycle a new aquarium.
I'm not sure food with an ammonia smell is something that I'd want to feed my fish. Perhaps your description of the smell is misleading. I use Tetra. It smells like a combination of "fishy" and preservatives. When such a product as krill begins to breakdown, it gives off a rancid odor, which is basically a breakdown of fats. Fats are always the first nutrient to breakdown, whenever something becomes stale.
I don't know but it almost burns your eyes and nose hairs out when you take a good whiff of it. I've used Hikari before and it doesn't smell like this. I'm assuming the company is closed for the weeked because I called them a couple times already. My fish are way to expensive to try it out without clarifying this first.
