I'm setting up a new 320g soon (8 1/2 feet long by 29" x 25" high). I'd like to use metal halides on it to get that nice shimmery effect. Anyone here use metal halides on freshwater? Can anyone recommend specific fixtures? I picked up a Hamilton pendant just to see how that looks. I'd probably need three or four of them to cover the 8 1/2 foot span though. Perhaps there's a single longer fixture that would do nicely?

Just looking for suggestions or ideas. If anyone has used MH on a large freshwater setup, your input would be appreciated. :)

I used them before, just as you for the shimmery effect.

They can create a lot of heat, and the intensity isn't really important on a FW tank, so I'd go with the lowest wattage possible. Also, even at low wattage they can be very bright, so some fish may not like the brightness. I had floating plants to provide some shade, and the halide was on a timer so the intensity was only for a few hours a day (fluors did the rest).

Since the quality of the light isn't really important on FW, on your tank I'd suggest two 4' Coralife or Current USA strips and replace the bulbs with lower wattages.
