Just wondering if anyone had used these.

Or, if they aren't very effective, how can I get rid of that oily surface layer in my tank?

I have a Eheim 2217 and an AC110 on a 75 gallon.

That'll help get rid of it... also when you do your water changes, you can use the gravel vac to surface skim... hold the vac at about a 45* angle to the surface, and adjust the angle as needed to keep air from getting in the siphon tube and breaking the siphon.

laying a clean sponge on the top of the water every few days and letting it float around for a while will also take care of the problem without resorting to buying anything or replumbing your filter system. One of my issues with the serface skimmers is that almost all filter pumps operate a LOT better when the pick up intake is well below the serface of the water. This is due to the increased water pressue as depth increases. You can notice this effect during water changes when the level is lower if you watch the filter output.
