Hi,

I've just upgraded to a larger 72x18x15 tank, and am going to trasfer my africans across. I'm going to need a new filter, but don't want to spend too much, so was wondering if it was possible to use a pond filter, since they seem to be somewhat cheaper?

Thanks

They're only cheaper because ponds are usually stocked comparatively lower than aquariums, a 80G pond filter likely won't cut it on a 80G aquarium, but you're really not talking too much money to adequately filter something that size - one of the larger canisters will suffice.

Something with a genuine 300+GPH (so prob close to 500GPH on the box), FX5 and co. would be overkill, that's unless you're going for a heavily overstocked-type setup.

Sand/Bead canister filters work great for big monster tanks. Also can put in-line with a wet/dry sump and even a UV. :)

I've used a BioForce 2000 Pressurized Pond Filter on tanks for several years, which is essentially a 5 gal canister filter with an external pump. I've used it with pumps anywhere between 500~1800 gph (rated). I tried it with a 2400 gph but it was too much pressure (leaked).

I do recommend them to friends...
