How do they work out I was thinking about getting a tominaga dive clean mini or a ovation 1000 internal submersible power jet,I like the style of these filters that have the spary bar outlet,I have a aqua clear power head and thinking about maybe putting the sponge filter on that as well, Can you buy the spary wand for any powerhead, My tank is full of live plants and Im about to add community fish in hopes of breeding,I'm also running sand as a subrate and wonder how it would do with this types of filters,I'm running a pengiun 330, aquaclear 30 and need something towards the bottom of the tank, I know sand doesnt do well with filters but will keep it mid tank,Also can you buy extensions for the intake of the hob filter to get it deeper in the tank? Thanks

A lot of questions in an odd order bud. Ill try my best here.

Yes you can extend HOB's with inexpensive slip on extensions for their intakes. If you can't get them at the LFS www.drfostersmith.com or www.bigalsonline should have them.... However! Be careful about them getting too close to the sand and possibly sucking sand in to the HOB = Very bad

Secondly

Depending on the type of aqua clear power head you have you may be able to fit on what aqua clear calls a "quick filter" These are awesome and remove waste and debris down to 1 micron (I know because it really uses up the cartridge sleaves :)
If your power head model is not formatted for the quick filters you could try and find the best fit for a sponge filter but you would pretty much have to measure and shop around to get a snug fit to the sponge filter tube. It can be done and lots of people do it they are great bio filters and become excellent mechanical filters too with proper flow.

As for the spray bar. I personally think it would be unattractive to have tubing and all that but if you want to give it a shot check the manufacturers of canister filters for spray bars that accept the tubing coming from your individual power head.

Id check with Eheim , Rena etc

Hope this helps

The above advice is spot on . i also use filter sleaves from aquaclear but i have found a way to save on sleaves . What i do is buy white fine filter pads about 18" long and qaurter inch thick and wrap these round filter sleave plastic insert . you can remove and wash when dirty then replace after a few goes, this way i get a month of polished water for £5 ish . I also put the air hose on this tells me when clogged as bubbles stop flowing through

Thanks for the tip. Since mine feeds a 18 watt turbo twist UV I gotta keep organics and particles out as best as possible as to not clog up or scratch the quartz sleeve. If it was for water polishing (Most are) That would be an awesome alternative.

I have it on the aquaclear 70 . I have few of the black filter tubes ready and just change every few days . Clean pad and leave it ready to swap when needed . The pads I use are just store brand rectangle sheets that wrap round plastic insert Tube . Just rip of the sleave that comes with it and use insert . I would not be without 1 in every tank
