I have a decent aptitude for building stuff it's just that I've got my wet/dry sump pretty much done and I'm not in the mood to fabricate more.

The 4 inch holders are on sale for 25ish bucks, with socks and some other tubing. By the time I wound up buying a sheet of plexi/acrylic, buying a large enough hole drill, buying the socks, and investing my time I think I'd probably be in the same ball park as just buying the CPR "sock it" things.

The tipping point for me would be if these things don't attach to the sump very well or if they have some quirk that needs to be addressed that would make it worth my time to plan out and build my own sock filter.

This is what I Did for my socks. 100 micron socks.

Okay, I got two of the 4 inch Sock It's with the included 200 micron bags.

I went with the 4 inch over the 7 inch due to the restrictions of size in my riser chamber of my wet/dry sump I built. I also am going to plum each of the one inch drains from my tank directly to their own filter sock. Two 4 inch sock its, after discount, were barely more expensive than a single 7 inch sock it. Two is better than one in my opinion.

It appears the things are pretty well made and designed with one exception. You can raise and lower the height of the sock holder with these little pegs that are supposed to be placed inside of some holes on the tank mount. In theory it should work fine but in practice the holes in the mount don't come out to the right size to allow the pegs to fit, reaming them out with a drill bit will be easy but it's a minor thing.

At the lowest height the filter socks are just about perfectly level with the spillway for my riser over the wet/dry media. I am gonna raise the filter socks so they will be roughly 1/2 inch above the spillway. If the bags were to become clogged there will be no worries about the geyser effect, the design of the mount will direct the overflow into the direction of my spillway.

I am away for the weekend but I'll try to get some pictures uploaded at some point soon. All told my 55 gallon wet/dry sump should come out working very well and be very quiet once I fit some trim covers to the top of the 55 gallon.

These are not the greatest pics in the world, had to use GoPro camera as my other camera is being used by my parents.

Picture from the side with the "boxes" that the filters rest in elevated to be above the spillway. I have 2 or 3 more peg holes available to raise the boxes higher if I wanted to.

And a shot from the back showing how the brackets attach to the tank.

There are plastic screws used for adjusting the level of the bracket so that you can get the boxes/filter holders to be perfectly level. I actually like the way it's set up because I am able to slide the brackets slightly to get a perfect slip fit for the drain pipes to connect to the filter sock boxes.

One of these days I might be able to get some better pictures up when I get the better camera back.
