Has anyone been using Wireless-N for WiFi? Just wondering whether there really is an increase in signal range.

Yea, RF is tricky. I'm a RF/Network engineer, I've installed lots of N units with mixed results. Overall though, I have noticed a significant increase in range over a/b/g

When I changed to an N router from a G my average download speed increased from about 700kb/sec to 1-3 meg/sec. It was a very notieceable inprovement for me. My laptop also has a wireless N card. I am not certain how much of a difference that would make. I know when my iphone is on my network I have ripped 5 meg/sec before.:headbang2

I haven't used any N yet. Now I've got a client that needs more WiFi range and I'm debating between range extender and an N WAP. I'm thinking N although I'll have to get N network cards for those computers. A range extender would probably be the cheaper way to go but N is faster too. So many technically savvy people on this forum....thanks for the input.

depend on alot of factors... i know never put a wifi wil alot of body of water such as aquarium...

Interesting point, I've wondered why at home I'm like 20ft from my WiFi router and sometimes my signal is only 'Good'. Must be the tanks in between.

the problem is that the signal is poor or not there at all about 100 feet from the WAP because there are a few walls in between. Maybe another access point would be possible. There's probably already a Cat5 jack over there.

May need a more robust WAP, more than likely there's a lot of RF interference (this could come from microwaves, flourescent lighting, building material, etc.....) You need to look into a WAP with adjustable power, maybe even find a new home for it.

If there's a drop ceiling I'd recommend installing it inside the ceiling (walls won't be as much of a factor)

Maybe look into these Cisco units, with some 5.2 dbi Omni-Directional dipole antennas

You can also use a power injector to run the unit POE (power over ethernet)

The wap isn't sitting in a server room is it? If so move it somewhere with less electrical devices and try a few different channels before you nix the one you have now. Sometimes that can make all the difference.
