I've been wanting to volunteer for a while now, and my college career is quickly ending. So i figure i have the time and the money now so why not. I was thinking for an upcoming break i'll try to get a short term volunteer position at a place like rainsong (http://www.rainsongsanctuary.com/) or with the IRCF with the iguanas (http://www.ircf.org/).

Anyways, has anyone here done anything like this and have an experience to share?

I've volunteered at a Raptor Rehabilitation Center near where I lived one summer. It was a great experience working with birds of prey. All also helped a research team do a census count on Morelet's Crocodiles in Belize during the spring of 2002. Now that was really cool.

I once volunteered at a Suicide Youth Hotline. VERY hard thing to do...

This is also a very nice thing to have on your resume considering you will be job hunting soon.

KUDOS to you!

I volunteer at my school leading an after-school Rocket Club. I also have volunteered at our town's annual celebration. My wife volunteers at a Community Outreach (dental) Center and at the local Senior Center. It's the best job you never got paid for! It also looks good on resumes/applications, as Gr8 said :)

Go do something work related, or something that makes you feel good and looks good on a resume. (I.E. Volunteer at blood drives at your college, etc.)

My intention was for reptile/exotic related work...which is why i posted in this section, but its great to see all that other stuff you guys are doing. I've got plenty of work related internships etc, this time i'm looking for something animal related. I have the time and money to travel, i figure it would be cool to go somewhere cool.

Ok this isn't in the same place you are but I'l tell you. When I was 16 I started volunteering with a blind hockey team that lasted till I was 23 and then I moved on very awesome very fun very rewarding. I have since I was 17 volunteered as a coach for lacrosse (box) which I played as a kid. When I stopped playing I wanted to give back so I started coaching calgary. I moved to lethbridge for school and co-founded their lacrosse league at 18 again that is amazing. Now back in calgary seeing that program do so well I love going to lacrosse games in lethbridge no one knows who I am when only 8 years ago I was on the floor with every group from mini tyke to senior to run try outs and clinics sometimes 16 hours a day. Everyone wanted to talk to me back the and now most younger groups have no idea who I am. Pretty cool to volunteer your time to start something up and it just goes on without you. It will always be my silent legacy. I still coach lacrosse and since I was 22 hockey as well. They aren't saving lives or anything but it sure is a rewarding feeling to volunteer. Especially when people look at you and wonder why. When I coach everyone wants to know why a guy without kids volunteers. The fact they don't understand is the most rewarding I am one of the few people who knows how truly cool it is to help just cause you want too.
