anyone with any infos on Neolamprologus meeli

 • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
We tend to stay away from them since they're still in a state of severe confusion and it just irritates me when I have a fish and don't know what to call it and can't (in good conscience) share fry.
Some folks say they're Lepidiolamprologus meeli some folks say they're L. hecqui. I don't know what to believe especially when there are further claims that true individuals of one or the other have never been collected. It doesn't help that there seems to be some "meeli/hecqui" going around with quite a bit of yellow, that don't look like either L. meeli/hecqui or L. boulengeri, but an in-between and assumably hybrids. At least from what we've seen locally, we picked some up and they behaved as expected, much like L. boulengeri that we've kept before.
Temperament and behavior is best described as a big nasty fish in a tiny package. They're worth keeping if you're into attitude and behavior. Aggressive, active, bold, everything you'd expect from a big Lepidiolamprologine only in smaller size. Not that the compact size makes them any easier to keep in smaller tanks, a 36" 30 or 40gl tank should be about right.
From what we've experienced with L. boulengeri and the weird "L. boulengeri x L. meeli/hecqui" females will easily spawn in shells but will take small crevices like a small cave or PVC elbow in a pinch. Males prefer rockwork. They're good with their fry till they want to spawn again. Then it's out with the old and in with the new. Prolific.

Thanks for the responses

If they can get to 5" that'll be awesome, I have always love these types of fishes.

I used to keep Lamprologus ocellatus and when I first saw this pair I got, I was like whoa. These looks just like the ocellatus but with more attitude.

I actually have this dilemna now that i've acquired a few of them myself. I've gone through so many forums trying to look for info and it seems that only a few people have kept them. I currently have 1 inch juvies... the store labeled them l. meeli but i had to make sure. Still hard to tell at their stage..but these ones don't seem nearly as aggressive as the ones i've been told. maybe b/c they're still young?

Well I just checked on them and saw about six little babies in there:headbang2. Wondering if that's the average brood size cause I didn't know about the youngsters and threw a pictus cat in the tank a few days ago.:(
