Thinking about buying a half dozen of these little beauties for my 90 gallon and going for a pair as the centerpiece fish (the Centrals in my sig have been relocated to the 125).

I've read all the standard care sheets and dug up old threads, but can't find anything comprehensive or particularly recent.

Anyone keeping these (past or present) that would like to chime in with any additional info?

My guess is that you'd keep them similarly to the temporalis -- water in the low to mid 80s, a good pellet food as a staple with supplements of frozen and freeze-dried treats, and very high water quality. My guess is that you'll have to start thinning the numbers fairly quickly because six chocolates in a 90 are going to grow fast.

Most of my acara- and severum-like cichlids (true parrots, chocolates, sevs, ports, etc.) don't show heavy conspecific aggression until they start to come into early breeding age ("puberty"), which is usually anywhere between 6 months to a year old. You'll probably be okay until that starts, then it may get a bit hairy.

As with temporalis, I've read that there's very little (if any) sexual dimorphism so it'll be tricky to identify males and females unless you know how to vent fish. I've never personally done it... I like to let my fish pair off naturally anyway.

Thanks!

I have experience with SA Cichlid behavior and techniques to obtain a pair, and am aware of how big they get (although I'm not quite as concerned as you seem to be about the 90 gallon size, I don't think six juveniles would outgrow that for a while).

Was looking to hear from someone with experience with this particular species, as they are rarely kept and do differ considerably from temporalis.

i picked one up from TUIC in october and love the lil guy.
he is def a piggy when it comes to food but its part of his charm lol
they look way better in person and under good light than any pictures i've seen online. i keep mine in a 200 with a temporalis, 3 psittacus, 2 atabapo sevs, 3 rotties and a small L###. he doesn't cause any problems but i can't see him getting bullied either. i only expected some friction from the bigger temporalis but they totally ignore each other.
