I have a Mystus Nemurus that was mislabeled at the shop and misidentified as a juvenile, by me. I have had it about 3 years and i estiamte it to be just over a foot long. It grew up with some Cichlids in a 150g tank and is only agresive if they invade it's emidiate space. But will tolerate a Plecostomus right next to it, at times. I have benn reading about the visious nature of the fish, but have not witnessed it in this one. Dose anyone have expirence with this fish? If so, can you tell me if I have an exception to the rule or if disaster just hasn't struck yet? I am atching some pics of the fish and set up. If you have a copy of "The Manual Of Tank Busters" it looks exactly like the one on page 113.

Sorry I meant to mention that it has been renamed a few times. You are correct that is the current name for it. Some of my books are out of date and I tend to remember the older designations.

On some fish I end up spending a lot of time trying to figure out why it looks just like another fish but has a totally different name, only to discover that it is the same fish with an updated name. Helps keep things interesting.:)

Just wanted to bump this. If no one on this site has experience with this fish I can't imagine where I can find someone that dose.

H. nemurus and H. wyckioides are two different fish. They look very similar when young but grow up to look very different. The only way to id them at these sizes is the size and shape of the adipose.

At a foot long in 3 years yours is probably stunted by being in a small tank and not getting all that much to eat. Its quite thin, which suggests it hasnt been eating that much - they fill out when they grow. This might explain its lack of aggression.

It is not the H. nemurus. There has apparently been confusion over the years because of it's original designation as Mystus Nemurus.

I rechecked my records. The fish was a return to a pet store that I got at about 6 inches in 2008. It did have to spend some time in a 55g tank when I moved it from Oklahoma to Iowa. The rest of the time it has been in a 150g tank. It certainly sounds like it might be stunted but non of it's tank mates have been. They do tend to out compete it for food so I make an effort to get food in front of it. When comparing it to pictures of fish the same size it appears to be normal. I have grown many other large fish out in the 150 before moving to a larger tank. I am working on it but don't have a larger tank at the moment. I might be able to set up a temporary stock tank for it. If I have stunted it, is there any thing else you could suggest to improve conditions for it?

Curent tank mates are. One 12" Red Snook, one 9" Dempsey, one 8" Oscar, one 6" Oscar and one 9" Plecostomus. It is a 150g tank with filtration rated for 300+.

Thanks for the input.

The only experience I had was I bought one at 1/2" and as it grew I noticed that it had no eyes. I ended up isolating it to ensure that it ate and wasn't going to starve. So my experience with them has just been with one in solitude. However, I have thrown in feeders and surprisingly, I don't think it had any difficulty finding them as they would be all gone by morning. I have been bitten by him a few times during water changes. I'm not sure if it sensed me as a threat or possibly food since it was blind.
