it's mostly a matter about letting the gar get comfortable. water conditions, waterflow, cover and tankmates definately play a large part in deciding how much time it is before your gar starts to feed. also, what are you feeding it in comparison to its diet in its previous home?

I agree with everything XANDER typed. it's also about waiting. at some point, your gar will eat. it took my first gar about 3 weeks before he took food. It took my second gar about 2 weeks. one thing that i've started doing recently, is using a bbq skewer and placing krill or silversides on the end of it and placing it in the tank, next to the gar. i do this because they're slow moving fish and i have them housed with fish that are faster, greedier and more aggressive when feeding. this guarantees my 2 gars a fair amount of food.
I took a dead feeder and just wiggled it into the water.
And he took the bait, but my Gar was very easily tempted, and still eats out of my hand.
Now if i just throw in a feeder it will take ages for him to take it.
He's gotten so used to handfeeding!
