I have been using the API ammonia tester for ages now and I seem to never be able to get a bright yellow result. There is always a very light hint of green. I was wondering if anyone else has experience this. I find it hard to believe I have any ammonia issues. Here are the details of my tank:
- Running for 6 months
- 180g running 3 AC110s packed with fluval biomax (cut the original sponges in half to allow for more bio)
- tank contains 2 piranha (1 10in rhom and 1 4-5in manuli)
- I feed only small pieces of filet which I make sure get eaten
- I feed the rhom once a week and the manueli twice a week
- Had the same issue before I added the manueli and the tank only had the rhom
- I do weekly water changes of about 50% and have been cleaning the HOBs monthly
- The tank is bare bottom and no background so I can make sure there isn't food hanging around anywhere
- Nitrites are always 0 and Nitrates stay under 20 usually unless I skip a water change which does not happen often

With such light stocking, minimal feeding and consistent water changes, I don't understand why there would be any ammonia. I will say it is a pain to read the tester and always hard to tell between certain colors. I thought the test could be old so I bought a brand new one just to have the same problem.

I also get a slight green in the ammonia test even though I know it has to be 0. I've just began to deal with the fact it'll never be a bright yellow. I have a 10inch rhom in a 80g by himself and also feed once week and still get what looks to be between 0 and .25. Tank is fully cycled.

I get the exact same thing. Never a pure yellow ammonia test. Been like that two years now.
