In a couple months I plan on setting up my 20g to be heavily planted and try to breed 2 triple red apisto agiz (cant remember spelling). They are probably the coolest looking fish in hobby in my opinion. Anyone have any experience on these guys and can offer some tips, advice or just post pics of your fish or set up?

I have a group of apistogramma agassizii in a 75 gal grow out tank now.. they are super cool fish...

I've kept apistogramma cacautoids off and on for a long time, they are very cool too...

I've kept the cacs as pairs in 29 gal tanks and as a colony in a 125 gal tank (tried in 4' tnaks but it didn't go very well).

I was fortunate to live in an area that had soft water right out of the tap. They did wonderful and bred easily for me...

Keeping multiple males in the same tank is asking for trouble, but pairs are very easy to keep. It soudns like your set up (20 gal heavily planted) is a wonderful environment for them.

20g is definitely big enough for a pair. I'm keeping a pair of A. borellii in a planted 20g with a few dithers (will remove them once the A. borellii get more confident). Here is a video of it. You can see the female in the first few seconds.

I also have a group of 6 A. rotpunkt breeding in another 20g. 5 males and 1 female I think....miraculously they are getting along, and the female breeds with the dominant male every couple of weeks.

Also tried out over crowding Apistos recently and it's been working very well too - I have probably two dozen individuals (4 species) in a planted 90g with some young Geophagus and angels, and there's no fighting whatsoever. I think if I remove other fish, I can easily add a few more dozens without any problem.

I have 2 pairs in a 25 gallon tank and adding the second pair was a huge misake. I started out with a pair Viejeta and last weekend I bought a second pair C. triple reds and they have been fighting ever sense. I'm going shopping today for a slightly bigger tank to see if that helps break up the aggression.
